Masterplanning, Planting design, Community coordination.

The London Borough of Hackney invited us to take part on a two year regeneration scheme in central Hackney in partnership with Studio Weave.

Hackney’s Narrow Way was transformed from a busy bus route into a welcoming pedestrian-friendly public space. The new pedestrian street was dotted with groups of giant wooden planters and seating areas creating meeting spaces and the perfect backdrop for community festivals.

The planting changed during the 24 months of the installation, moving from a semi-ornamental vegetable garden to a mixture of wild flowers, blooming perennials and larger fruiting trees such as apples (Malus domestica) and strawberry trees (Arbutus unedo). The list of species included Cirsium rivulare, Anemone x hybrida, Cenolophium denudatum, Dahlia bishop of Canterbury, Geum sp., Helenium sp., Linaria purpurea, Salvia nemorosa, Chamerion angustifolium, Dryopteris erythrosora, Skimmia ‘Kew Green’, Hydrangea sp. etc.
